Artist Statement:
For me, art is an outlet for the worlds that fill my dreams. My ears spill with images of the amazing places I’ve been and all the places I want to go. An overactive imagination makes it easy to picture a scene in near-perfect detail. When I’m working, I have a clear idea of exactly what I want to make in my mind, but for the most part, I have never actually seen what I am thinking of. I have to piece it together using a combination of reference photos and my own imagination. Because of this, I tend to keep my work loose, and switch media often. My general process for any piece of art is to do a whole lot of brainstorming and dreaming until I have an idea I am set on. From there, I’ll do a rough sketch to put my idea on paper so it’s more concrete. I look for reference photos of things that look like what I want to make and dissect how that artist made it. This way, I can create something effective with a medium I may not be fully familiar with yet. Then I get to work!
My goal is to put together an exhibition that looks like a slice of history. My art creates a fictional world around one mystery woman, “R.K.,” that I have created from scratch. I’ve told her story as a collection of artifacts from her time in an attempt to make it look like a museum exhibition that’s all about her. Each piece is either found or made by me, and each one has its own context in R.K’s life. I want patrons of this exhibit to become part of the story itself, as they step into a world where R.K. really existed, and where they can view her personal history displayed on a museum wall.
